Wild animals and the Pirates of Eckernförde
Well, again, it’s already quite a while since I last wrote down the ‘news’ of my life. I always have to wait for such a long time because my life here in Germany was so far… well, boring is not the right word…but it is for sure that it is not as interesting as life in Dublin was. However, I guess I can’t compare them with each other and I’m certain that, once back to ‘normal’ life, it will improve a lot and I will have loads of things to tell you.
But until then I need to bore you with the things that happen to me day in and day out. Though it is quite surprising: Every day when I lie in my bed it’s always a bit strange how quickly the day has passed by but when I have to think of something to write in this wonderful blog my mind suddenly goes blank.
Nevertheless, there is a reason why I’m writing now. I wanted to let you know about me and my life before I’ll take my departure to the southern part of Germany. On Friday night I will leave the northern regions and will head to Freiburg. Well, it’ll only be for a week and I’m not very eager to go yet but there’s a ‘quest’ waiting for me there: I need to find a new flat. A sweetheart as he is, my brother will go with me which implies that we’ll go by car. On the one hand this is so much cheaper for me than to go by train (which apparently is a quite dangerous thing to do at the moment in Germany anyway) and I guess it’ll be a lot more fun than to go there alone though , surprisingly, I still have some friends down there but my best friend and some others will have there final exams while I’m there. So, unfortunately, until they got that over with they won’t have much time for me. And I do know me quite well by now, I’m sure that I would lose my enthusiasm about finding a flat on the very first day…!
Now, before I leave I wanted to write about the past days (or shall I say weeks?). The first thing which is worth mentioning is that I went to watch and listen to a band called ‘Keltics’. Well, I don’t think that is a big surprise when I tell you that they played Irish music. They gave a gig in town and it was really quite nice: gorgeous weather, many people, cold beer and some good songs… I had to pull myself together not to become melancholic
!
On Sunday 13/08/2006 we had a barbecue with the family at my aunt’s place since my family was a bit disappointed that they hadn’t seen me at all since I’m back in Germany (ooops) and they wanted to get all of us together and have a good time. Well, it certainly was very good: great food, nice chats. Unfortunately, it rained that day but that wasn’t much of a problem since the terrace had a kind of roof. So we were lucky and enjoyed the time together
!
At the following weekend (17/08-20/08) something interesting and maybe for many of you unknown took place in Eckernförde: the town was invaded by pirates! It’s a kind of festival which is celebrated every year. To be honest I don’t have a clue about its origin, if it has some real background or if they invented it simply because Eckernförde is predestined for something like that since it lies at the edge of the Baltic?!? I don’t know! However, as I already said, it takes place every year in summer (to make sure that many tourists will be there as well
) and it is really nice to go there and spend some funny and interesting hours there. Maybe I should tell you very quickly what it is. Okay, so the ‘pirates’ (in fact, they are actors) invade the town and march to the City Hall where they capture the mayor so they can rule over the city for the whole weekend. It is quite good to watch how they come to the beach in their boats and yell around and fight with the good ones! But the rest of the weekend is more or less a better carnival. However, I was there on Friday as well as on Saturday. Friday was really sad since it rained like hell all evening, there were almost no people at all and we got so soaked
! Saturday on the other hand was great, awesome weather, many people, good music!
There’s also something else to tell about the Saturday. We went to a kind of zoo but it wasn’t that kind of zoo you may have in mind now because there were only animals which once lived in free nature in our region. I so enjoyed this day, it was good to do something different beside the usual stuff. And there were so many cute animals. We spent all day there, walking through the whole park which took us about 6 hours! I will put some pictures in the gallery as soon as possible so that you can see yourself!
But now, what else can I tell? Well, sure there is always the usual Volleyball training. You may be surprised why I always mention this stupid training but since I’m back ‘home’ it is really an important part of my life. I realise how much I missed this. As far as possible I try to do some kind of sports every day: either Volleyball or running!
For tomorrow I have another ‘date’ with a friend of mine! I so look forward to that. She is a really close friend although we don’t see each other very often. She visited me EVERYWHERE. Apparently it doesn’t matter where I am or where I will go she will always follow me and spend her holidays there
. Well, I’m sure we will spend some great hours together and there will be many things to tell!
A few weeks ago I promised another friend to have a read over her essay. That’s what I did these past days. It took quite a while since it was 60 pages long and I have to admit that the topic was not one of my favourites: Something about the internet and IT etc. If you didn’t already know before, now at the latest it becomes obvious that I don’t really have very important things to do
(though you can be sure, Rona, that I would have tried to do that even in ‘busier’ times)! Anyway, I finished that today and I guess that for these last days before my departure I will have to busy myself in the garden again (jaja, I DO work in the garden
)!
Well, that’s about it. But you can be sure that I will have to tell much more very soon since there are many interesting things lying ahead of me: first of all Freiburg and almost directly afterwards (okay, with a week in between) I will go on holidays to Riga and Krakow, then Freiburg again (to move all my things there) and finally a few days Dublin before University will start again on 23/10. I guess I don’t need to say that but I do it anyway: I look forward to all that and I’m happy that I get the opportunity to do all these great things and finally meet some people again who mean a lot to me
!
Okay dokay, now I have to say ‘goodbye’ again for a while but I’ll be back soon!
So, take care everybody and I hope that all of you are doing great!
Big hugs,
Steffi
PS: I promise that some pictures will follow soon
!
