• Full democratization does not necessarily follow regime change. Hybrid or ‘grey democracies’ have also emerged after 1989. Analyze the process of democratization in Poland and Russia and evaluate the factors that have most affected the process of transition in both cases.

• There were a number of serious challenges to communist rule in Eastern Europe: Hungary 1956, Czechoslovakia 1968 and Poland 1980-81. Outline the genesis and consequences of each challenge and evaluate the potential of each episode to precipitate the collapse of Soviet power in Eastern Europe.
